Winter Guidelines for Portable Toilets on your Construction Site

Posted on by bianca in Articles, Blog Comments Off on Winter Guidelines for Portable Toilets on your Construction Site

Just because the cold weather’s here doesn’t mean your construction projects are going to stop. When the temperature dips, getting your work done quickly and efficiently is a primary concern but you also need to see to the comfort and safety of your workers.

By law, construction sites in Ontario are required to supply one restroom for every 15 workers with hot and cold running water for washing hands. Employers must also provide facilities that are heated in the winter, if possible.

Pitton Plumbing understands these conditions and can supply you with units that meet all of these rules and guidelines. Our self-contained units are perfect for projects on construction sites and will allow you to follow all of the Ministry of Labour’s regulations regarding sanitation. We also offer Double Self-Contained Units, which provide two separate washrooms which can be labelled for men and women’s separate usage.

Our self-contained units include the following, making them ideal for winter use and provides a comfortable experience for your employees:

  • Heaters
  • Interior lighting
  • Hot and cold running water
  • Continuous power ventilation
  • Soap, tissue and paper towels

If at all possible, place your portable restrooms somewhere indoors to protect them, and most importantly your workers, from the elements of the season.

Guidelines for Outdoor Construction Site Set-up

If an indoor location isn’t possible, here are some guidelines to follow when placing portable toilets for construction sites outdoors in the winter. Our units are made of a durable, heavy-gauge steel exterior, so you can be confident they will hold up in the winter elements and construction site or yard atmosphere.

  • Keep them clean
Weekly servicing and cleaning helps prevent the tank from freezing. Luckily for you, weekly service is included with all of our portable restroom rentals.
  • Stay warm
Make sure your portable units stay warm by installing heaters, if they’re not already supplied. You can also place them in direct sunlight to take advantage of some free solar power the natural way.
  • Keep out of the snow
To keep them as accessible as possible, avoid putting units in a place where the snow will naturally drift or where snowplows will push the snow.
  • Easy access
Put portable toilets somewhere that’s easy for service trucks to access. Try to place them near a paved road.
  • Stay out of the wind
Place your units next to a wall or building to shield them from strong winds. Heavy winds can blow the unit over and wind chill can make the inside of a portable toilet even colder than usual.
  • Avoid employee falls
Place salt around the entrance of the restroom to make sure that your employees don’t slip and hurt themselves. The salt also prevents the units from freezing to the ground.

Many people worry that social distancing measures will prevent them from being able to celebrate life’s special occasions. However, with a little creativity, it’s more than possible. Though large gatherings must be hosted outside, this doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the comforts that come with hosting an event at an indoor venue. All it takes to throw a VIP outdoor party is a little extra planning.

Social Distancing in Style

Both small celebrations and large events like weddings, baby showers and milestone birthdays can now be celebrated outside. Though the health and safety of your guests should always be a top priority, you can still throw an unforgettable party without putting anyone at risk. A good decorator can transform your backyard or public park into a chic venue. Just be sure to organize everything beforehand to ensure that social distancing measures can be easily followed. Have signs that instruct guests to go one-by-one to get their food and that remind everyone waiting to use the portable toilet or handwashing station to stand at least two metres apart. It’s also a good idea to have hand sanitizer available in several locations around the venue.

Climate-Controlled Portable Toilets

A VIP event deserves a VIP washroom. There are many occasions for which you can rent an air-conditioned portable toilet, and our VIP trailers are a classy upgrade from our regular units. These trailers each include two washrooms and can provide up to 600 uses. The combination of black floors, white walls, and mirrored vanity make it the perfect choice for any upscale gathering. It also comes stocked with toilet seat covers, a trash receptacle, and dispensers for soap and paper towels. For the safety of your guests, the steps into the trailer are equipped with a handrail. As an added bonus, our VIP trailers are air-conditioned and heated, so your guests will be comfortable no matter the weather!

These Sinks Are a Must-Have for Outdoor Events This Year

Posted on by bianca in Articles, Blog Comments Off on These Sinks Are a Must-Have for Outdoor Events This Year

If you need running water for an event, renting a sink trailer ensures you can meet your hygiene needs. Essential for everything from simple hand washing to food preparation, this unit is a must-have for any gathering that requires you to supply your own water. Here’s what you should know about these portable sanitation units.

All About Sink Trailers

A sink trailer is a portable unit that can hold up to 870 litres (230 gallons) of water. Each unit comes equipped with soap and paper towel dispensers and has eight stainless steel sinks, which can provide both hot and cold water. Our sink trailers run on 120 V outlets, and you have the option of renting a generator to power it from us or using your own.

When Do You Need a Sink Trailer?

Consider renting a sink trailer if you’re hosting an outdoor event with little to no access to running water. This can include but is not limited to:

  • wedding receptions,
  • family reunions,
  • neighbourhood block parties,
  • fundraisers
  • BBQs, and so much more!

Running water is necessary at any gathering, as guests must wash their hands regularly. Furthermore, soap and water can be used to wipe down any surfaces that may have been touched by multiple people, such as chairs or picnic tables. The Provincial Government of Ontario is now allowing larger gatherings to take place so, if you’re planning on hosting, make sure running water is available at all times and check in with your local municipal bylaws for more great safety advice.

Safety First

If you’re planning an event, your guests’ safety should be at the forefront of your mind. You can still throw the party of the year while abiding by the rules laid out by the government. Renting a sink trailer is a great start, as it allows for frequent hand washing and for surfaces to be cleaned often. Be sure to enforce physical distancing and have your guests take turns when going to get food and washing their hands at the sink trailer. It’s also recommended that you encourage everyone to wear masks — an exception can be made when eating, of course. Enjoy the company of your family and friends, while staying safe and healthy.

Where Does The Waste From A Porta Potty Go?

Posted on by bianca in Articles, Blog Comments Off on Where Does The Waste From A Porta Potty Go?

Whether it was at a party, a festival, or on a construction site, you’ve probably used a porta potty at least once in your life. Which means, at some point, you’ve probably wondered about where all the porta potty waste ends up? As a portable sanitation rental service, this is one of our most frequently asked questions. Here’s how porta potties work.

a branded Pitton Plumbing portable sanitation truck

How Much Waste Can a Portable Toilet Rental Hold?

Our regular porta potties can hold 60 gallons, or 227 litres, of waste. If you’re planning on renting porta potties for an event, the number of toilets you should order will depend on the number of attendees and the duration of the event, as illustrated in our handy Portable Toilet Usage Chart for Events.

On construction sites, the number of porta potties required depends on the number of employees on the site. These numbers are listed on our Portable Toilet Usage Chart for Construction Sites.

If you think you require a portable toilet with a greater waste capacity than our Regular Portable Unit, don’t hesitate to ask about the other models we have available.

How often are they cleaned?

We send technicians to clean our portable toilets once a week. These weekly cleanings are included in the cost of the rental and continue throughout the entire period. Your location will be listed on the service route for your area, so you’ll be given a good idea of when to expect your technician. If you feel your porta potty needs to be replenished more frequently, you can easily schedule extra cleanings.

Where is the porta-potty waste sent?

We are fully certified by the Ministry of Environment, which means we’ve been trained to be vigilant when handling waste from portable toilets. When one of our technicians comes to clean your porta-potties, they’ll drain the waste into their vacuum truck. After, it gets transferred to a licenced waste treatment facility where it’s safely disposed of.

The Importance of Hand Hygiene and How Handwash Stations Can Help

Posted on by bianca in Articles, Blog Comments Off on The Importance of Hand Hygiene and How Handwash Stations Can Help

Practising good hand hygiene is the best way to avoid the spread of harmful germs and prevent illnesses. The majority of common infections are spread when you use your hands to touch your face, other people and surfaces such as tabletops, doorknobs and handrails. As the world grapples with the coronavirus pandemic, it’s important to recognize that washing your hands frequently and thoroughly is crucial to your own health and that of others in your community.

Our Portable Solutions

Often, at outdoor events and construction sites where portable toilets are needed, there’s no running water. In these situations, renting handwash stations is a sanitary way to ensure proper hand hygiene practices.

Designed to be used by up to two or four people at a time, these units come equipped with soap, paper towels and the necessary dispensers. Fresh water flows from the holding tank out of a faucet when you step on the foot pump. This allows you to avoid wasting water and touching contaminated surfaces.

Alternatively, you can rent a sink trailer. Equipped with eight stainless steel sinks and self-closing faucets, these units are ideal for events with children or onsite food preparation. The trailer has a capacity of 230 gallons and uses electricity to provide hot and cold water. Soap and paper towel dispensers are also included.

Hand Hygiene In 10 Steps

A recent report in the International Journal of Epidemiology found that only about half of Canadians and people in other high-income countries wash their hands after using the toilet. However, washing your hands is easy and involves only a minimal amount of time. Here are the 10 steps you need to follow to disinfect your hands.

  1. Wet your hands with warm water
  2. Apply enough soap to completely cover your hands
  3. Rub your palms together
  4. Rub your right palm over the back of your left hand with interlaced fingers, and vice versa
  5. Place your palms together and rub your interlaced fingers back and forth
  6. Rub the backs of your fingers against the opposite palm with your fingers interlocked
  7. Clasp your right thumb with your left hand and rub rotationally, and vice versa
  8. Rub the tips of your right fingers rotationally in your left palm, and vice versa
  9. Rinse your hands with warm water
  10. Dry your hands

You should spend at least 20 seconds scrubbing your hands. Remember to use a cloth or paper towel to turn off the faucet to avoid contaminating your hands.

Tips on Renting a Portable Toilet for your Fall Harvest

Posted on by bianca in Articles, Blog Comments Off on Tips on Renting a Portable Toilet for your Fall Harvest
getting ready for the fall harvest

Anticipating a good crop this year? Whether you hire a crew to help you pick your bounty or offer U-pick services to the public, you need to make sure the extra visitors to your property are comfortable. Here’s how to go about renting a portable toilet and other sanitary installations for your fall harvest.

The Benefits of Portable Bathrooms

Portable toilets offer several benefits for both you and your visitors, including:

• Comfort and convenience for the people visiting your property
• Stress-free sanitation that’s zero-maintenance
• Customized rental times so you only pay for what you need
• Different models to suit your needs

Deciding on Your Needs

The number of units you’ll need depends on the number of people you expect to have visit your farm and how long you think they’ll stay. If you offer apple or pumpkin U-pick services and you’ll have less than 50 visitors per day, you’re probably safe with just one bathroom.

Accommodate Seasonal Workers

If you need to provide a restroom for a seasonal crew, you’ll want to make sure you have enough portable toilets scattered throughout your property to handle the demand. A good rule of thumb is to provide one toilet for every 15 workers. If you need more than one, you may want to place them in different locations to make bathroom breaks quick and convenient for your crew.

Don’t Forget Your Visitors!

If you have some combination of U-pick services and workers, you’ll need to provide adequate facilities for both groups and ensure they’re conveniently located. Depending on the experience you’d like to provide your guests, you can choose between regular portable units, wheelchair accessible units, and even air-conditioned VIP trailers that provide both hot and cold water.

Add a Handwashing Station

Most portable toilets come equipped with hand sanitizer and some models even feature water-free soap and paper towels. But for some situations, you’ll want to provide your guests and crew with access to running water and soap. In these cases, adding a handwash station might be necessary.

When Should You Rent an Air-conditioned Portable Toilet?

Posted on by bianca in Articles, Blog Comments Off on When Should You Rent an Air-conditioned Portable Toilet?

Today, you have a number of options when renting a portable toilet. While the classic no-frills portable units have their place, VIP trailers are also available. These luxurious restrooms come complete with porcelain toilets and urinals, sinks with stainless steel fixtures, ample counter space, mirrors and, to top it off, heating and air conditioning.

Air conditioning is a convenient feature in portable restrooms, especially during the summer months. Here are some of the circumstances in which they come in handy.

When you want to beat the heat.

Let’s face it: most people don’t love using portable toilets (or even public bathrooms, for that matter), and if they’re overheated as they do their business, it makes the experience that much less agreeable. It’s unavoidable that regular portable toilets, even high-quality ones, get pretty darn hot in the summer sun. If it’s a scorching day, a unit with air-conditioning is a nice perk to have.

When you want to maximize users’ comfort

Even when the day isn’t sweltering, it’s more comfortable in spring and summer to have a cool and well-ventilated restroom. If you want your guests to have the most pleasant overall experience at your event, an air-conditioned portable toilet is a key ingredient. It’s a must-have, for example, for more formal gatherings, such as fundraisers, upscale parties and corporate events. When attending formal events, guests don’t want to come out of the washroom perspiring.

For weddings

There are some additional considerations to keep in mind when choosing portable toilets for a wedding. On such occasions, they’re more than just bathrooms. They’re also the room where the bride and bridesmaids will be touching up their hair and makeup, where the groom and his groomsmen will be straightening their ties and slicking back stray hairs.

Additionally, guests will be spending time in the bathroom and you want to ensure they feel cool and comfortable. You certainly don’t want them breaking into a sweat and spoiling their suits, dresses, makeup or hair. Of course, the extra space and the mirror that come standard with VIP trailers are no less essential in these circumstances.

Tips for Renting Portable Toilets for your Festival

Posted on by bianca in Articles, Blog Comments Off on Tips for Renting Portable Toilets for your Festival

Planning an outdoor event takes a lot of planning, especially if it’s a concert or festival that will attract large crowds. One of the most important things to do to ensure the event is a success is to make certain you provide enough restrooms. Not only will this make attendees more comfortable, but it’s also required in order to get a permit.

Things to Consider When Renting Portables for Festivals

These are the most important points to think about when renting portable toilets for your festival.

  • Make sure you have enough of them: the last thing you want is to find yourself with too few portable toilets. If you don’t have enough, the result will be unsanitary bathrooms with huge lineups. For an idea of how many you’ll need, take a look at our usage chart.
  • Spread them out: if you’re holding your event in a large space, such as a park, don’t put all your portable restrooms in the same area. Spread them out so attendees will always have one close by when they need it.
  • Have them cleaned often: our service includes weekly cleaning, but for festivals that see lots of people over the span of a few days, it’s a good idea to have them cleaned more often. We’re happy to arrange extra cleanings to suit your needs.
  • Think about where to place them: not only do you want to spread them out, but you should also think strategically about where to place them. Make sure they’re close to where people will be eating and drinking, but not too close to where food is being prepared.
  • Who’s your audience: it’s important to have an idea of the demographic you’re attracting before renting portable toilets for your festival. For example, a family event will have different needs than a multi-day concert where adults will be drinking all weekend long.
  • Keep bacteria at bay: don’t forget to put handwash stations near your portable restrooms so everyone can wash their hands after going to the bathroom. They’ll be especially appreciated at food festivals.

Reliable Construction Portable Toilet Service for Your Sites in Hamilton and Surrounding Areas

Posted on by bianca in Articles, Blog Comments Off on Reliable Construction Portable Toilet Service for Your Sites in Hamilton and Surrounding Areas

Whether you are undertaking a small home renovation or a large scale project, addressing the sanitary requirements of your construction crew and clients is the key to keeping your project running efficiently. One of the best things you can do is place portable toilets on-site. Not only will this benefit your crew and clients, it will also be environment-friendly, and help you save money.

Portable toilets hamilton

Benefits of Portable Toilets at Your Construction Sites in and around Hamilton:

  • Productivity: On-site porta potties will reduce the crews’ downtime and eliminate any distractions when trying to find an off-site restroom. Stress-free bladders translate to happy, productive workers who will complete projects competently, and on time!
  • Protecting Client Privacy: The absence of on-site sanitation could mean that at times, workers may have to use the client’s existing bathrooms. This could be a potential intrusion on the individual or families’ lifestyle or routines while they are already coping with construction woes such as noise, dust, and debris. Porta potties are a convenient solution to protect your client’s privacy.
  • Health and Safety: The contained units of porta potties ensure that the construction sites remain clean, safe, and disease-free. These units take up minimal space and do not need ongoing water supply, making them an environment-friendly option.
  • Legal Requirements: Depending on the length and type of project, certain laws such as Construction Health & Safety Act and Occupational Health and Safety (OSHA) may not only mandate portable toilets on construction sites, they may even specify the exact type of units required. Providing the appropriate porta potties will help you stay on the right side of the law.

Renting the Right Construction Porta Potties

If your construction site comes under the purview of legally defined requirements, you will have to follow the stipulation regarding type and number of porta potty units on-site. Certain regulations call for heated portable sanitation, with flushing toilets and warm water. They also state that the toilet bowl be separate from the holding tank, and the flushed waste be chemically treated in the holding tank.

If your site is exempt from any legal requirements, you can choose the unit that is most suitable to your site and budget. Usually, porta potty units come with a toilet seat, holding tank and urinal. These units are built to withstand extreme temperatures between minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit to plus 90 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also rent units that come with a portable sink and flusher. Most portable bathroom providers offer regular deliveries and maintenance services.
